The ocean is one of the greatest treasures and also holds in it many of the greatest treasures of our planet. It is the largest component of the planet, covering 70% or 1.3 billion cubic Kilometer of the earth’s surface and houses a diversity of underwater species. The ocean has helped sustain life here on earth for and thousands to millions of years now, some, in ways that we might have never known before, and this is what my coffee table book is about.
The ocean is the largest biosphere on earth. For decades and centuries now, the ocean has had a major role in making our planet habitable. It regulates global climate by using its current as a conveyor belt in distributing cold water from the poles to the equator and warm water from the equators to the poles, making the distribution even. 70%-80% of the Oxygen we breathe as well as the carbon dioxide by product is produced and absorbed by the ocean. It holds pharmaceutical potentials due to its diversity of underwater sea life, from plants to animals that scientists can use and test to make pharmaceutical drugs. Because the ocean is a large body of water, it provides the largest supply for rain water and also homes more than 700,000 or 1,000,000 diversity of breathtaking species, two-thirds of which is still unexplored or unknown. The Ocean has different layers or different parts and the deeper it is, the newer and more interesting the species we see.
The top most layer it known as the Epipelagic Zone or the Sunlight Zone. This Zone is where most of our leisure activities occur such as fishing and swimming. It is only 656 feet deep and it is where we can see the many beautiful coral reefs that undergo photosynthesis. The second layer is the Mesopelagic Zone or the Twilight Zone which is between 656 to 3,281 feet deep. It is the home many strange creatures like the swordfish and the wolf eel. The third layer is the Bathypelagic Zone or the Midnight Zone. Because of the very low amount of sunlight that hit this zone, most creatures are either black or red. The fourth layer is the Abyssopelagic Zone or the Abyss. This Zone is near freezing point and there is no sunlight that hits this zone. The last layer is the Hadalpelagic Zone or the Trenches. This is the zone that remain explored because of its very cold temperature and high pressure.
Many parts of the ocean still remain unexplored, but due to the large rate of destruction and pollution happening, the urgency for exploration has doubled and become more widespread. The amount of oil spills and plastic being dumped in the ocean has caused threats to marine life and diversity, resulting in the increased rate of extinction. Nothing and no one is to blame for this but ourselves and the results of our actions.
The Ocean truly is a one of a kind treasure, we depend on it everyday from the food we eat to the air we breathe and it holds many secrets that is still to be explored. But due to our reckless actions, bit by bit these secrets may become destroyed before we even find them. That is why we should be careful and keep our actions intact, this way future generations can still witness the wonderful mystery that the world has to offer and making this coffee table book has helped me realize all of these and appreciate the wonderful treasure that is the ocean even more.
